Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Lateef Fagbemi has criticized politicians who tarnish Nigeria’s reputation on social media, asserting that such individuals are unfit to lead the country. Speaking at the Abuja Social Media Summit themed “Harnessing the Power of Social Media for National Development,” Fagbemi argued that political differences should not be used as an excuse to harm Nigeria’s global image.
Fagbemi stressed the importance of using social media responsibly, cautioning against speech that undermines national unity. He stated that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to guiding Nigeria toward prosperity, but that collective efforts are necessary to achieve this goal.
He urged citizens to be mindful of their words on social media, as harmful statements can damage the nation’s progress. “Those who speak ill of their country to settle political differences should never have the opportunity to lead the same country at any stage,” Fagbemi emphasized.
Represented by his spokesperson, Kamarudeen Ogundele, Fagbemi highlighted the role of social media in fostering transparency, accountability, and civic engagement. However, he also acknowledged the challenges posed by misinformation, cybersecurity risks, and the digital divide, calling for collaboration between the government, civil society, and the private sector to promote social media-driven national development.
