The Anambra State Government has pledged to pursue those responsible for the recent cult-related killings in the Nibo community, which left at least 13 people dead. The violence erupted on Sunday during the community’s New Yam festival, known as the “Nibo onwa asaa” festival, when suspected cultists attacked an arena near Oye Nwochichi Market.
Witnesses reported that the assailants, emerging from a Lexus 300 jeep, opened fire on festival-goers, killing eight individuals on the spot before moving to another location where additional casualties were reported.
In response to this tragic incident, Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, issued a statement on Monday, assuring the public that the government is taking the matter seriously and has already initiated measures to apprehend the perpetrators.
“The Anambra State Government is aware of the deaths that resulted from alleged cult-related killings that occurred in Nibo, Awka South LG, on Sunday, October 20, 2024,” Mefor stated. He condemned the violence, highlighting it as part of a disturbing trend of cult-related crimes in the region and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ending such acts.
The government extended condolences to the families of the victims and promised a thorough investigation to bring the culprits to justice. Mefor also urged the public to provide any information that could assist in the investigation, assuring confidentiality and the possibility of a reward for useful tips.
He encouraged law-abiding citizens to continue their daily activities without fear while the government collaborates with security forces to address the situation. The commissioner announced that hotlines for reporting information would soon be made available to the public.
