England U19 international of Nigerian descent, Ethan Nwaneri, continues to showcase his exceptional talent. He played a key role as Arsenal defeated Championship club Preston North End 3-0, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.
The Hale End Academy product made headlines with a brace on his EFL debut last month against Bolton Wanderers, and he followed up with another impressive goal at Deepdale Stadium.
Gabriel Jesus opened the scoring for Arsenal with his first goal of the season in the 24th minute. Nwaneri doubled the visitors’ lead with a superb curled effort just nine minutes later, showcasing his skill and poise. The scoring was capped off by super-sub Kai Havertz, who added a stunning header in the 57th minute.
Nwaneri nearly secured his fourth goal for Arsenal when his shot hit the crossbar in the 76th minute. He was substituted four minutes later, receiving applause from the traveling fans as he made way for Ayden Heaven.
According to Whoscored’s statistics, Nwaneri is currently the fifth highest-rated player in the Carabao Cup, boasting a rating of 8.49 among players with at least two appearances in the competition. He earned a rating of 8.48 for his performance against Bolton Wanderers, ranking just behind Raheem Sterling, and achieved 8.50 for his man-of-the-match display against Preston.
Only Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo (9.37) and Manchester United’s trio of Alejandro Garnacho (9.04), Casemiro (8.57), and Bruno Fernandes (8.55) rank higher than Nwaneri among the best-rated players in the Carabao Cup.
Nwaneri has now made eight appearances for Arsenal’s first team, accumulating 207 minutes on the pitch.
