The Ondo State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has urged the state government to enhance the welfare of healthcare workers to stem their exodus from the state.
During an event in Akure to mark the 2024 Physicians Week, NMA Chairman Olumuyiwa Alonge called for the implementation of an improved salary structure, specifically the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, across all healthcare sectors. He emphasized that better compensation could help combat the recent brain drain affecting the sector.
Alonge attributed the departure of health workers to poor working conditions and urged the government to prioritize the welfare of medical professionals. He stated, “When healthcare professionals are fairly and equitably compensated, they feel valued, which strengthens their commitment to patient care.”
This year’s Physicians Week theme, “Ensuring Universal Applicability in Remuneration: A Panacea to Talent Retention in the Healthcare System,” highlights critical issues in the sector. Sub-themes include “Mitigating the Impact of Infectious Diseases: Addressing the Monkeypox Outbreak and Beyond” and “Early Detection of Breast Cancer and Current Trends in Management.”
Alonge warned that the ongoing exodus of experienced healthcare professionals threatens the state’s healthcare system. He said, “This mass exodus is not merely individual decisions; it reflects a system that has failed to provide adequate compensation and career fulfillment.”
He added, “Fair remuneration is more than just a salary figure; it recognizes our value, motivates excellence, and guards against burnout. When healthcare workers are compensated appropriately, they feel respected and dedicated to their roles.”
The chairman also highlighted the issue of inconsistencies in salaries, stating, “Many doctors find themselves overworked and underpaid. These disparities discourage talented individuals from entering or remaining in the workforce, increasing the burden on those who stay.”
In addition to improved salaries, Alonge urged the government to enhance working conditions for healthcare workers to help retain talent in the profession.
