The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported a major power outage in Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State, following an attack by suspected vandals on one of its transmission towers. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, September 21, 2024, around 1:44 AM, disrupting electricity supply in both Damaturu and Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.
In a statement issued by Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, it was revealed that vandals deliberately targeted and brought down tower No. T372, located along the Gombe-Damaturu-Maiduguri 330kV transmission line. The vandals cut off all four tower footings, leading to its collapse, which was later discovered by TCN’s emergency patrol team.
The company stated that efforts are already underway to provide temporary power solutions to the affected areas. TCN engineers are working on back-feeding Damaturu through a 33kV transmission line from Potiskum, while power supply to Maiduguri will be maintained by the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant (MEPP).
TCN emphasized that work will begin immediately to dismantle the collapsed tower and reconstruct the damaged transmission line. The company condemned the recurrent attacks on national infrastructure and urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities around transmission facilities to law enforcement authorities or TCN offices.
In its commitment to quickly restore power, TCN assured that it would expedite the reconstruction process to ensure a swift return of electricity to the affected regions.
