Conor Gallagher has agreed to a transfer to Atletico Madrid, following Chelsea’s acceptance of the Spanish club’s £33 million offer. Although there were initial concerns about Gallagher’s willingness to move to Spain, the 24-year-old has now confirmed his eagerness to join Atletico.
Gallagher is expected to travel soon to complete his medical examination and finalize his contract with the club, marking the end of his long association with Chelsea, where he has been since joining the academy at age 6.
Chelsea had previously proposed a two-year contract with an option for an additional year, but Gallagher expressed dissatisfaction with both the contract length and the role offered within the squad. Reports indicate that Gallagher’s playing style might not fit well with the possession-based tactics introduced by Chelsea’s new manager, Enzo Maresca. This misalignment suggested that Gallagher might not be a regular starter under Maresca’s system.
With less than a year remaining on his current Chelsea deal, the club chose to sell Gallagher to an international team rather than a domestic rival. This decision allowed Atletico Madrid to secure the midfielder at a reduced price.
