Public commentator Professor Patrick Utomi has expressed concerns that Nigeria, under the current federal government, is moving towards fascism and dictatorship. In his statement, Utomi criticized the recently withdrawn Counter Subversion Bill, sponsored by House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, as indicative of a broader attempt by the political class to consolidate power.
Utomi also lamented the lack of transparency regarding the salaries of National Assembly members and suggested that Nigerians should consider recalling these lawmakers. He voiced his alarm on his X handle, stating, “The speaker’s desire to imprison anyone who criticizes politicians and the National Assembly’s ongoing dishonesty about their own emoluments are troubling. The appropriation of public funds without consent is theft. If the police do not act, citizens should initiate recall processes starting with the Senate President and Speaker.”
Utomi warned of the dangers of state capture and creeping fascism, comparing the current situation to historical precedents where similar conditions led to catastrophic outcomes.
