Yemi Olanrewaju, the technical adviser for Enyimba of Aba, has stated that the team’s progression to the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup was largely due to luck. Enyimba, a two-time CAF Champions League winner, secured their advancement with a dramatic 3-2 victory on penalties against Burkina Faso’s Etoile Filante after a goalless draw over two legs.
Despite having several chances to win during regulation time at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Enyimba struggled to capitalize on these opportunities. Reflecting on the match, Olanrewaju expressed concern over his players’ performance, saying, “I wish we could have ended the game before the penalties considering the chances we missed. We were lucky to escape, and we can’t proceed to the next stage with this level of play.”
He highlighted the need for improvement, emphasizing, “If we are to progress to the quarter-finals, we must take advantage of our opportunities. There was a bit of anxiety from the lads, and they seemed rushed in their approach. We were not composed in the final third. We are fortunate to have advanced to the group stage.”
With the elimination of El-Kanemi Warriors, Remo Stars, and Enugu Rangers, Enyimba remains the sole Nigerian team in continental club competitions this season, marking a critical moment for the club as they aim to enhance their performance in the upcoming group stage.
