In a shocking incident in the United Kingdom, five children have been arrested on suspicion of killing an 80-year-old man who succumbed to injuries following a serious assault in a park. The incident occurred on Sunday evening, and the elderly man later died in a hospital.
Leicestershire Police have confirmed that the suspects include two 14-year-olds—a boy and a girl—and three 12-year-olds, comprising one boy and two girls. The attack reportedly took place near the park’s entrance, and the group of young individuals fled the scene before emergency services arrived.
A murder investigation has been launched, with police appealing for witnesses who were in the park or the surrounding area at the time of the assault to come forward.
Insp Emma Matts, the Senior Investigating Officer, expressed the gravity of the situation: “Sadly, following the death of the victim last night, this has now become a murder investigation. Officers are continuing to work at speed to establish the details of the attack, and we have made a number of arrests as we continue to understand what has happened.”
The park remains under scene preservation as investigations continue, with local officers conducting reassurance patrols in the area to address community concerns.
Leicestershire Police also stated that they would voluntarily refer the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, as the force had previous contact with the victim before the incident.
