Gabriel Suswam, the former governor of Benue State, has voiced his deep concerns over the prevailing economic hardship in Nigeria, highlighting its severe impact on many households. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Suswam expressed frustration at the skyrocketing prices of basic food items, notably eggs, stating that the cost of a crate has surged from less than ₦1,000 to a staggering ₦10,000.
“This means that people like you and me can’t afford to eat eggs in our houses,” Suswam lamented, emphasizing the challenges faced by everyday Nigerians. He urged President Bola Tinubu to urgently reassess his economic team and convene a meeting to address these pressing issues, noting that many citizens struggle with transportation costs to their workplaces and the rising expenses of feeding their families.
Suswam said, “The President should call a meeting not just on economics; people cannot transport themselves to their offices, people cannot afford to feed their families.”
In a separate matter, Suswam confirmed his continued ambition to become the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). During an emergency stakeholders meeting in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, he reiterated his commitment to the role, asserting that it is time for the North Central region to take over the position from former chairman Iyochia Ayu, in accordance with the party’s constitution.
Suswam indicated that he has garnered support from state party members and insisted that the selection of Ayu’s successor would be determined by the national leadership of the party rather than through an election process. He dismissed rumors of internal strife within the party, attributing them to mischief-makers attempting to seize control in the state.
He stated, “Some mischief-makers wanted to hoodwink and take control of the party in the state,” and added that the PDP could have secured victory in the 2023 governorship election if not for such disruptive activities.
