Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has inaugurated 23 newly elected local government chairmen, urging them to uphold the highest standards of governance and operate without bias or favouritism. The chairmen, elected under the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC), emerged victorious in the recent local government elections.
During the swearing-in ceremony on Monday, Governor Alia stressed the importance of integrity, transparency, and accountability in leadership. He urged the chairmen to work diligently, providing strategic leadership and building on the developmental foundation laid by the outgoing caretaker committees.
Governor Alia advised the chairmen to be responsive to the needs of their constituents, encouraging them to engage in constructive dialogue and collaboration with stakeholders to foster inclusive governance. He reminded them that leadership is about service, sacrifice, and bringing democratic deliverables closer to the people, not personal gain.
The governor also highlighted the importance of cooperation between local and state governments, particularly in light of newly granted local government autonomy, and emphasized that no tier of government should operate in isolation.
In his closing remarks, Alia urged the chairmen to start their duties with energy and to extend an olive branch to opposition members by welcoming their ideas and constructive criticisms. This, he said, would strengthen democracy and promote good governance across the state.
