Shizzer Joy Nasara Bada, the former Commissioner of Finance and Accountant General under ex-Governor Nasir el-Rufai’s administration in Kaduna State, was arrested by ICPC operatives at Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos on Sunday. Bada was reportedly attempting to travel abroad when she was detained.
The arrest follows suspicions that Bada may have been trying to flee due to ongoing corruption investigations involving both her and former Governor el-Rufai. ICPC officials had been monitoring her movements after receiving intelligence about her potential attempt to evade questioning.
This arrest is part of a broader probe targeting several high-ranking officials from el-Rufai’s administration. Reports indicate that the scrutiny focuses on alleged financial mismanagement during their tenure, with multiple individuals under investigation.
The Kaduna State House of Assembly recently indicted el-Rufai for allegedly embezzling ₦423 billion from the state treasury. Although the specific charges against Bada have not been disclosed, there are indications they involve significant financial irregularities and misappropriation of public funds.
Bada’s arrest has raised speculation about a broader investigation into the former governor’s administration. The ICPC is expected to release further details as the investigation unfolds, potentially shedding light on the extent of corruption within the previous leadership.
In response to the allegations, former Governor el-Rufai has initiated legal action against the Kaduna State House of Assembly, challenging the claims of mismanagement of ₦432 billion during his eight-year term. His attorney, Abdulhakeem Mustapha, filed a fundamental rights lawsuit in June to contest these accusations.
