Jewish priests, under the Unique Forum of Orthodox Judaism, have written an open letter to Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Kanu has been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) since 2021, following his extradition from Kenya.
The forum’s leader, Rosh Nasishemtov Ihe madunweiheyah, expressed in the letter that Kanu’s release could restore peace in Nigeria, particularly in the tension-filled South East. They also argued that Kanu’s continued detention is unjust, claiming that he seeks justice for his people and that his actions have been misunderstood.
Kanu’s family has also raised concerns about his health, requesting that he be allowed access to medical care outside of DSS detention. His sister, Princess Nnenne Kate Kanu, highlighted Kanu’s prophesies about Nigeria’s current challenges and appealed to the president to release him for humanitarian reasons. The family expressed gratitude for the forum’s visit and prayers at their home.
The Jewish priests, along with Kanu’s family, believe his release would calm ongoing unrest and bring stability to the region.
