Manchester City midfielder Rodri will miss the remainder of the season due to a serious knee injury, posing a significant challenge to the team’s quest for a fifth consecutive Premier League title. City manager Pep Guardiola confirmed that Rodri underwent surgery for an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury sustained during last week’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal.
“He had surgery this morning for his ACL and some meniscus damage,” Guardiola said. “So, next season he will be here. This season is over.” Rodri’s absence is particularly concerning for Guardiola, who also aims to reclaim the Champions League crown this season.
Describing the news as the worst possible outcome, Guardiola highlighted Rodri’s vital role in the squad, calling him “irreplaceable.” He expressed the need for the team to adapt and find a way to cope without their key defensive midfielder. “We have to do it as a team and find a way to play during a lot of months without an important player for us,” he noted.
Rodri, instrumental in Manchester City’s success last season, played a crucial role in their fourth consecutive Premier League title win and was named player of the tournament at Euro 2024, where Spain triumphed. His absence is expected to be felt significantly, especially as City has lost all four of their previous Premier League matches when he did not play.
The 28-year-old, a contender for the Ballon d’Or, has been unbeaten in his last 52 Premier League appearances, a streak dating back to February 2023. Guardiola acknowledged the squad’s depth, indicating alternatives such as Mateo Kovacic and Ilkay Gundogan, who could fill Rodri’s role.
As for potential transfers to bolster the squad, Guardiola mentioned discussions with the director of football, Txiki Begiristain, regarding January options. “We’ll talk today with Txiki. It’s closed until January, so we’ll have time and see potential problems we have,” he said.
Additionally, City will also be without Belgian midfielder Kevin De Bruyne for their upcoming match against Newcastle as he continues to recover from his own injury.
