The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) has reassured residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) about the recent earth tremors, emphasizing that there is no environmental threat.
In a statement released on Wednesday, NGSA Director-General Professor Olusegun Ige clarified that the tremors experienced between September 13 and September 16, 2024, are of low intensity and pose no significant risk. The agency recorded approximately 48 separate seismic events, with increasing intensity and frequency over the period.
The NGSA Monitoring Station at Katampe reported several ground motions, with one mild tremor on September 13, six on September 14, over 21 on September 15, and more than twenty on September 16. The tremors have been categorized as weak to light on the Modified Mercalli Scale, ranging from III to IV, and are considered a low-level threat.
Professor Ige explained that preliminary analyses and on-site assessments indicate the tremors result from accumulated stress along identified faults and subsequent seismic energy release. Most epicentres are located northeast and southwest of the NGSA-5 Seismic Station, primarily around the Mpape and Katampe areas.
Residents in Mpape, Katampe, Maitama, and surrounding regions are advised not to panic, as the tremors are generally mild. The NGSA will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary. Real-time monitoring of seismic stations will ensure timely alerts for any significant seismic activity.
