The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has officially upgraded its ICT unit to a full department, naming Deputy Comptroller-General (DCG) KI Adeola as the head of the newly established ICT-Modernization Department. This decision was ratified during the NCS Board’s 59th Regular Meeting in May and confirmed at the 60th Regular Meeting held on September 10, 2024.
In a statement by Chief Superintendent of Customs Abdullahi Maiwada, the NCS emphasized that this upgrade is pivotal for advancing its digital transformation. The newly formed department will lead efforts to modernize operations and enhance technology integration within the service.
DCG Adeola will lead the department with support from an Assistant Comptroller-General and five Comptrollers. In addition to Adeola’s appointment, the NCS Board also endorsed O.A. Alajogun as Deputy Comptroller-General and appointed five new Assistant Comptroller-Generals, including I.G. Umar, M.M. Tiley-Gyado, B.A. Makinde, O.A. Salefu, and T. Bomadi. These changes align with statutory retirement and the Federal Character Policy as outlined in the Nigeria Service Act, 2023.
The establishment of the ICT-Modernization Department comes at a crucial time when the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is grappling with technical difficulties related to its online passport application platform. The new department is expected to address these challenges, improving efficiency and reducing delays for users.
Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi commended the newly appointed officers, urging them to focus on revenue generation, trade facilitation, and combating smuggling. The upgrade aims to enhance operational effectiveness and address ongoing technical issues within the NCS.
