The Nigeria Police Force announced on Monday that Andrew Wynne, a British national also known as Andrew Povich or Drew Povey, is now wanted for allegedly conspiring to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government.
The police have launched a comprehensive investigation into the involvement of foreign mercenaries and individuals identified as subversive elements in the alleged plot against Nigeria’s democratically elected government. The announcement was made by ASP Olumuyiwa Adejobi at a press briefing held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
According to Adejobi, Wynne had rented a location at Labour House in Abuja, where he established an entity named ‘Iva Valley Bookshop’ and set up ‘STARS of Nations Schools’ as a cover for his purported subversive activities.
“The Nigeria Police Force has launched a comprehensive investigation into the activities of a foreign national and subversive elements plotting to undermine the democratically elected government in Nigeria through unconstitutional regime change and orchestrating violence across the country,” Adejobi stated.
The investigation, which includes collaboration with other security agencies, has led to the arrest of nine suspects who allegedly received substantial financial backing from foreign sources to destabilize Nigeria. The suspects are accused of orchestrating and funding violent protests, spreading false information, and engaging in other unlawful activities aimed at creating chaos and justifying an illegal attempt to overthrow the government.
This development follows the recent arrest of several Polish individuals by the Department of State Services (DSS) during a protest in Kano. Polish officials asserted that their citizens were not involved in the protest and were in Kano for an exchange program at Bayero University. These individuals were eventually released after several weeks in detention.
In a related matter, the police have summoned Comrade Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), concerning the presence of the British national at Labour House. Ajaero complied with an initial police invitation last week but has since been issued a new summons.
