Former U.S. President Barack Obama expressed his disappointment over Donald Trump’s victory in the election, acknowledging that it was not the outcome he had hoped for. However, Obama stressed the significance of accepting the peaceful transfer of power, a cornerstone of democracy.
Obama’s remarks serve as a stark contrast to Trump’s refusal to concede his 2020 loss to Joe Biden, which ultimately led to the violent Capitol attack on January 6, 2021. In a statement released on Wednesday, Obama emphasized the value of democracy and the necessity to accept different points of view: “This is obviously not the outcome we had hoped for. But living in a democracy is about recognizing that our point of view won’t always win out and being willing to accept the peaceful transfer of power.”
Additionally, Obama expressed pride in the efforts of Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, despite their loss, calling them “extraordinary public servants” who ran a remarkable campaign.
