Veteran Nigerian actor Patrick Doyle has voiced his strong disapproval of the phrase “I Am Chosen,” commonly chanted by followers of The Lord’s Chosen Charismatic Revival Ministries. In a recent Facebook post, Doyle labeled the phrase as “nonsensical,” arguing that it does not align with Christian doctrine.
Doyle stated, “The phrase ‘I am a chosen,’ as used by members of the religious sect called ‘Chosen,’ should never be connected to the Body of Christ.” He emphasized that the chant seems to direct adoration not towards Jesus, but towards the church’s General Overseer (GO) and the institution he founded. He noted, “The phrase does not mention or even imply Jesus in any way.”
The actor further argued that suggesting any connection between this phrase and giving glory to Jesus Christ is a mockery of the Christian faith. He stated, “Bloggers and content creators using the phrase are not mocking the Church of God but the sect in question and its founder.”
Doyle’s remarks come at a time when skepticism is growing regarding the testimonies shared by members of the church. Recently, social media platforms have been flooded with videos of congregants recounting miraculous experiences, which have sparked widespread debate. One notable testimony featured an elderly woman claiming she disarmed four armed robbers, resulting in the arrest of three of them. Another individual recounted surviving a kidnapping, multiple machete assaults, and gunshots without any injuries.
Doyle’s critique reflects a broader conversation about the intersection of faith, celebrity, and the narratives surrounding religious institutions in contemporary Nigerian society.
