Former Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam, has confirmed his continued pursuit of the national chairmanship position in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Speaking at an emergency stakeholders meeting on Thursday in Makurdi, Benue State’s capital, Suswam addressed party members, reaffirming his commitment to the race and his belief that the North Central region should rightfully replace former national chairman, Iyochia Ayu, in accordance with the PDP’s constitution.
Suswam emphasized that his candidacy had gained the backing of party members within the state. He noted that the process of selecting the new national chairman would not involve an election but rather a decision made by the party’s national leadership.
He also addressed rumors of internal strife within the Benue chapter of the PDP, dismissing them as baseless. According to Suswam, certain individuals were attempting to seize control of the party’s structure in the state, which he claims contributed to the party’s loss in the 2023 governorship election.
“Some people want to hoodwink us because they want to control the entire party structures in the state,” Suswam stated. “Their actions led to the comprehensive defeat of the party in the last polls, and we must stand firm not to allow them to have their way again.”
He further argued that only the ward congresses conducted in 15 Local Government Areas of Benue State would stand as legitimate. Despite the challenges, Suswam remains confident that the PDP can overcome internal divisions and regain its footing in future elections.
