The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially summoned Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Governor of Rivers State, to appear before its disciplinary committee. This move comes in response to allegations of anti-party activities that have caused significant internal strife within the party.
Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, disclosed this development during an interview with Channels TV on Monday. According to Abdullahi, Wike has been issued a formal letter requesting his appearance before the party’s disciplinary committee to address the allegations against him.
The controversy centers around a statement made by Wike in which he reportedly threatened to “put fire in their states” in reference to governors within the PDP. Abdullahi described this remark as “very disappointing” and “unacceptable,” expressing the party’s disapproval and concern over Wike’s choice of words. He emphasized that the PDP expected better conduct from Wike, particularly given his prominent role within the party over the years.
This action by the PDP comes in the wake of Wike’s recent comments during a PDP Congress in Rivers State, where he expressed his satisfaction with his current position in President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Wike, who is the only opposition figure serving in Tinubu’s cabinet, addressed the criticisms and speculations surrounding his appointment, stating that those unhappy with his decision should “go and hug the transformer,” a statement that further fueled tensions within the PDP.
Wike’s role in the APC-led government and his outspoken nature have sparked concerns within the PDP, leading to this disciplinary action. The party’s leadership is now seeking to address these internal conflicts and reassert its unity and principles as it navigates the challenges posed by Wike’s recent actions.
