The Board of Trustees (BOT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised concerns over the actions of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The BOT revealed that they have formally invited Wike for a meeting to discuss the internal challenges currently facing the party. According to Senator Abdul Ningi, a prominent member of the PDP’s BOT, Wike’s continued membership in the PDP while allegedly supporting and influencing other political parties against the PDP is a significant issue that needs to be addressed.
Senator Ningi, who represents Bauchi South, pointed out that the internal discord within the PDP stems from the aftermath of the last general election. He explained that several party members who were dissatisfied with the election outcomes are now seemingly intent on destabilizing the party from within. He remarked that the mindset of certain key actors within the party is detrimental to its survival, suggesting that some members have adopted a “scorched earth” approach because they did not achieve their desired political outcomes.
During an interview with Arise TV on Wednesday, Ningi criticized the contradictory behavior of those who remain in the PDP while simultaneously working against it by bolstering rival parties. “You cannot be a member of the PDP and at the same time be enriching or influencing other parties to fight the PDP,” he stated. Ningi underscored the importance of loyalty within the party, expressing that the current crisis would not exist if members were truly committed to the PDP’s success.
The BOT’s decision to reach out to Wike followed a meeting with Rivers State Governor Siminalaya Fubara, during which they discussed the ongoing political issues in Rivers State. Ningi noted that Wike has been identified as a significant part of the problem in the state, further complicating the situation.
Despite these challenges, Ningi expressed optimism over Wike’s recent declaration to remain in the PDP and continue the fight from within. He indicated that the BOT is committed to fostering unity within the party and is taking proactive steps to engage with Wike. “We have written a letter, the BOT has written a letter to him, to also meet him,” Ningi said, adding that they are keen to understand what the FCT minister can offer to help the party survive, particularly in Rivers State.
Ningi concluded by affirming the BOT’s dedication to ensuring a united and strong PDP, emphasizing that dialogue with Wike is a critical next step in resolving the ongoing internal conflicts.
