The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, emphasized the importance of diligence and careful consideration during the constitutional review process in his opening remarks at the Retreat of the Senate Committee on Constitution Review, held at the Bristol Palace Hotel in Kano on Friday.
Senator Jibrin highlighted that the committee’s decisions would have significant implications for future generations, urging members to prioritize the best interests of all Nigerians. “We are here in furtherance of the assignment given to us by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to revise the 1999 constitution, ensuring it aligns with the wishes and aspirations of our people,” he stated.
He stressed the need for collaboration among committee members, as well as engagement with stakeholders, to produce a comprehensive report filled with actionable recommendations for further Senate deliberation and approval. He remarked, “These enduring ideals of freedom, equality, and justice should guide us through this arduous task.”
Senator Jibrin called for synergy with the House of Representatives’ Ad Hoc Committee on Constitution Review, as well as collaboration with critical stakeholders including the executive arm of government, state governors, state assemblies, the judiciary, and civil society organizations. This, he argued, is vital for building consensus on contentious constitutional issues.
“This retreat presents a unique opportunity for constructive dialogue and collective problem-solving. Your invaluable insights will significantly enrich our discussions and inform our decisions as we embark on this vital journey,” he noted.
In a goodwill message, Adebo Ogundiyin, Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, praised the committee’s recognition of the importance of involving state houses of assembly in the constitutional amendment process. He stated, “Your collaboration reflects the Committee’s commitment to ensuring that the Constitution meets the true needs and aspirations of the Nigerian people.”
Ogundiyin stressed the importance of timely submissions to enable sub-national bodies to fulfill their responsibilities effectively. He recalled the challenges posed during the 2023 general elections that nearly disrupted the last constitutional alteration, asserting, “An early start will be key to ensuring a smooth and efficient process moving forward.”
Together, they seek to forge a more robust and inclusive constitutional framework for Nigeria, aiming to build a brighter future for all citizens.
