Senator Barau Jibrin, the Deputy President of the Senate, has raised concerns about the uneven distribution of federal palliatives in Kano State. According to Jibrin, numerous palliatives intended for Kano residents have not been equitably distributed.
During a meeting at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Thursday, Jibrin announced that his committee is tasked with ensuring that the 23,644 bags of 25kg rice allocated to Kano are properly distributed to those in need. The committee is composed of members from various political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the New Nigeria Progressive Party (NNPP), and the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC).
Jibrin explained that the committee’s formation was a response to President Bola Tinubu’s concern about the fair distribution of palliatives. “The President is concerned about the equitable distribution of aid to the people of Kano State and across the country,” Jibrin stated. He emphasized that the committee aims to create a fair and effective method for distributing the palliatives, ensuring that they reach the intended recipients.
The committee will implement a system where beneficiaries must provide valid identification, such as a National Identity Card, Driver’s License, Voter’s Card, or International Passport, to receive their allocation. Each beneficiary will be listed, and their signatures will be collected to ensure accountability. The rice distribution will occur at the ward level, with lists of recipients submitted to the local government committee and then to the state committee.
Jibrin’s remarks also highlighted the inclusion of various political figures in the committee to ensure a non-partisan approach. The committee includes Senator Kawu Sumaila of the NNPP, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development Abdullahi T. Gwarzo, Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory Dr. Mariya Mahmud, and other key stakeholders such as the Kano State APC Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas, and Deputy Governor of Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.
Jibrin emphasized the President’s dedication to addressing the needs of the people and improving the distribution process to prevent further discrepancies in aid allocation. The committee’s efforts aim to rectify past distribution issues and ensure that the palliatives effectively reach those who need them most.
