Senator Shehu Sani, a prominent Nigerian senator and human rights advocate, has urged Nigerians to avoid politicizing the recent national grid collapses, instead encouraging support for the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
Speaking to press members in Abuja on Saturday, Senator Sani referred to those demanding the removal of TCN’s management as “misinformed,” highlighting recent improvements in electricity supply under the current administration.
Sani noted the substantial progress in Nigeria’s power sector under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, contrasting it with previous administrations that spent tens of billions on the sector with minimal impact. He called on Nigerians to question the current budget allocations for electricity and private sector involvement in finding long-term solutions.
The senator acknowledged specific challenges TCN faces in northern Nigeria, where insurgency and banditry have severely damaged government infrastructure. He urged political leaders to stop using grid issues as a political tool and to focus instead on the pressing realities affecting power stability.
Sani also warned civil society groups against exploiting the situation to unfairly pressure TCN leadership, emphasizing the need to recognize TCN’s ongoing efforts to maintain consistent power delivery.
In response to recent outages in the North West, TCN reported that vandalism and sabotage were the main causes, with two towers on the Shiroro-Kaduna transmission line damaged. TCN engineers have implemented temporary solutions to resume power to affected areas.
Meanwhile, residents in Kaduna, Zaria, and Kano expressed frustration with the increasing incidents of vandalism, calling for stricter penalties. The TCN also revealed the introduction of an advanced Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system to better manage the national grid, a step widely praised as a significant improvement for Nigeria’s power sector.
As restoration efforts continue, the public is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that could jeopardize the stability of the national grid.
