On Monday, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command released a video of the violent clash between its officers and the Shi’ite group in Abuja. The confrontation resulted in the deaths of both police personnel and Shi’ite members.
FCT Commissioner of Police Benedict Igwe accused the Shi’ite group of killing several police officers. In contrast, Shi’ite representatives claimed the police attacked their members during a peaceful procession, leading to casualties among their ranks.
Abdullahi Musa, a leader of the Shi’ite procession, countered the allegations, stating, “They opened fire with live ammunition. I was there, and everyone began running. We were not armed; we were only carrying placards. How could placards be considered weapons? If the authorities had known we were armed, they wouldn’t have engaged us.”
In response, SP Josephine Adeh, the FCT Police Command Public Relations Officer, condemned the attack as unprovoked. She shared the video on her X handle, emphasizing the command’s determination to pursue those responsible.
“I’m deeply saddened by the unprovoked attack and brutal killing of our officers by these proscribed and ruthless Shi’ite members. Such acts are unacceptable, and those responsible will face the full force of the law. We will seek justice for our fallen officers,” Adeh declared.
