**Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), has urged Nigerians to reconsider migrating to countries that may be worse off than Nigeria.**
Dabiri-Erewa made this appeal on Thursday in response to a viral video featuring Nigerian women imprisoned in Mali. In the video, these women, primarily Nigerians, were pleading for government intervention to secure their release from the Malian authorities.
“Please, we appeal to bloggers and influencers. Help us appeal to Nigerians that where you are running to is worse than where you are running from (Nigeria),” she stated.
In her post on X, the NiDCOM chairperson elaborated on the situation, expressing regret that some of the women featured in the video had previously been rescued from Mali by the Nigerian government but chose to return.
“I want to address a viral video of some girls shouting from a prison in Mali, asking to be returned home. Some time ago, the Chief of Defence Staff helped us bring back some girls. We have identified some of these girls as some of those brought back that time. That they found themselves back in Mali is shocking,” she said.
Dabiri-Erewa emphasized the importance of obeying the laws of other countries, warning that crime, criminality, and irregular migration have become increasingly perilous. She added, “As much as the mission in Mali is working to see if they can bring people back, we must be cautious.”
