Super Eagles midfielder John Ogu has called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to retain Austin Eguavoen as the head coach of the national team following recent speculation about his departure. Eguavoen was appointed to lead Nigeria through the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification matches against Benin and Rwanda after the NFF failed to secure a permanent coach.
Despite limited time with the squad, Eguavoen successfully guided the Super Eagles to a notable victory over Benin and secured a draw against Rwanda. This performance has placed Nigeria in a strong position for AFCON qualification, currently leading Group D with four points, ahead of Benin, who have three points.
Ogu has publicly supported Eguavoen’s continuation, tweeting: “Dear @thenff, please keep coach @coacheguavoen. Give him time to keep building the team moving forward.”
Rumors had circulated suggesting that Eguavoen might step down, but these reports have been denied by the coach himself. The NFF is expected to make a decision on Eguavoen’s future before Nigeria’s upcoming back-to-back matches against Libya in October.
