A 40-year-old woman from Garin Mallam village in Guri Local Government Area, Jigawa, has tragically taken her own life by self-immolation after her husband divorced her. The distressing incident was confirmed by DSP Lawan Shiisu, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Jigawa State, in a statement released on Friday.
According to Shiisu, the incident occurred on Thursday morning around 7:40 AM. The woman, whose name has not been disclosed, allegedly doused herself with petrol and set herself on fire. Her body was found on the outskirts of the village and was severely burned beyond recognition. A police team from the Guri Divisional Police Headquarters was dispatched to the scene and confirmed the incident. The officers subsequently transported the remains to a hospital before handing them over to the family for burial.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the woman had been struggling with depression following her divorce several months earlier. The emotional turmoil and distress from the separation were believed to be contributing factors in this tragic event.
In response to the incident, Commissioner of Police Ahmadu Abdullahi urged the public to seek divine guidance and support in times of personal crisis. He also emphasized the importance of seeking advice and counseling from trusted elders when faced with complex issues to prevent such heartbreaking situations.
The case highlights the urgent need for mental health support and counseling services to assist individuals grappling with emotional and psychological challenges, particularly in the wake of significant life changes such as divorce.
