The Trades Union Congress (TUC) of the United Kingdom has sharply criticized the Nigerian government for the unlawful arrest and ongoing persecution of Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
Ajaero was detained at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport while en route to speak at the TUC conference in the UK. Although he was released last night, concerns remain about his continued harassment and intimidation.
At the conference, a UK TUC leader addressed the situation, stating, “Joe was released last night, but it is evident that his ordeal is far from over. His arrest was a severe violation of fundamental trade union rights, especially given that he was traveling to discuss the crucial role of trade unions in seeking solidarity.”
The leader reaffirmed support for Nigerian unions, condemning the Nigerian government’s actions and demanding an end to the persecution of Ajaero. “Nigeria’s trade unions still have our full support. We strongly denounce the Nigerian government’s actions and call for the immediate cessation of their harassment of Joe Ajaero,” the leader said.
Ajaero’s detention prevented him from attending an International Trade Union Congress meeting in the UK. There is speculation that his arrest may be linked to his refusal to respond to summons from undercover police or a petition filed against him by an airline operator.
The Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria’s secret police, has not commented on Ajaero’s arrest, maintaining a policy of silence on such matters under their new communication strategy.
