The decision to pause the petition against Chief Judge Okungbowa stems from appeals from various quarters urging for restraint in further action against the Edo CJ.
Following the Edo State House’s request, the Chief Judge established a seven-man panel to investigate allegations of perjury and leaking of government secrets against Shaibu. The panel, chaired by retired Justice S.A. Omonuwa, completed its probe on April 5 and submitted its report to the Assembly on April 8.
After reviewing the probe report, the Assembly found Shaibu guilty of leaking state government secrets and subsequently impeached him. Shaibu, however, has contested his removal, branding it as illegal and expressing his intent to challenge it through legal means.
In an update on the situation, Shaibu’s counsel, Emwanta, revealed that there has been no response from the CJN regarding Shaibu’s request to formally lodge a complaint against Chief Judge Okungbowa. Despite this, there are ongoing appeals urging for a halt in further action against the Edo CJ, leading to the decision to temporarily pause the petition.
When pressed on whether Shaibu was dropping his complaint due to these appeals, Emwanta clarified that while there are appeals for him to do so, no definitive decision has been made yet.
