- Describes campaign as an act in error
- Asks youth group to desist from such action
- Urges President Buhari to overlook call
A Coalition of over 180 civil society groups identified as Civil Society Groups for Good Governance, CSGGG, has reacted and condemned the call made by a youth pressure group under the auspices of YouthAid Nigeria, asking President Buhari to sack the Chief of Army Staff, Lt-General Tukur Yusuf Buratai over the recent attack on the governor of Borno State, Professor Umaru Zulum.
The President of the Group, Comrade Ogakwu Dominic, in a statement made available to newsmen on Monday in Abuja, sympathized with Prof. Zulum but also revealed that the call made to President Muhammadu Buhari by the group is quite unfair and very unimaginable.
The statement reads: “We condemn the Wednesday’s attack on the convoy of Gov. Babagana Zulum of Borno. It is a very irresponsible, regrettable and callous act; we however also condemn in all its entirety the call by the youth pressure group under the auspices of YouthAid Nigeria asking President Buhari to sack Buratai over actions made by some enemies of peace.
“The Nigerian Military under Buratai’s leadership, has performed greatly and constantly fought insecurity with the sole intention to bring it to its barest minimum if not completely eradicating it, we therefore are amazed at how the so called youth group, decided to make such call to the President asking for the sack of a man who has since assumption of office tried and continued to soar to ensure that insecurity is country is abated.
“This group is obviously threading on a needle, as it is clear that they lack full information or idea on the modus operandi of the Nigerian Army, this is just a ‘campaign of calumny’, we believe that there are ulterior motives behind their calls to the Federal Government. We advise them not to progress in error or act in haste; as concerned Nigerians, they need to ask questions before starting any campaign to demean a public steward, they shouldn’t constitute as nuisance to the society or be used as a tool to distract the Nigerian Army from performing its constitutional responsibility which is to safeguard and protect the nation.
“The Military remains the greatest pillar of our democracy and those who in their little minds, imagine that we are still in the era of military junta, has chosen to remain obsolete to the gallantry of the men and officers of the arm forces in fighting and abating insecurity. We believe that the attack on Prof. Zulum are plans of the enemies of peace and humanity at large to bring to the mud, jeopardise all efforts put in place by Buratai and his officers towards ensuring security and protection of life in our country.
“Again! we are not in support of the attacks on the governor; but information at our disposal reveals that the governor was even advised by the security agencies not to go thread into Baga Town, but he however insisted. The question now is what was he trying to prove?
“In lieu of this, we call on President Buhari to ignore such call as General Tukur Buratai, has worked and still is working to ensure the mandate of the Nigerian Army is achieved. Buratai should be encouraged not condemned or sacked. In due time Nigeria will look back to the past and have great reasons to smile.” Ogakwu added.
