  1. NNPC mentions MRS, Emadeb, Oando, Duke Oil as perpetrators of imported adulterated petrol: Kyari said the PMS was imported from Antwerp in Belgium with quality inspectors failing to detect the high level of methanol. The GMD disclosed that the NNPC first got report on the presence of emulsion particles in cargoes shipped to Nigeria on January 20. “NNPC investigation revealed the presence of Methanol in Four (4) PMS cargoes imported by the following DSDP suppliers namely: “MRS MT Bow Pioneer LITASCO Terminal, Antwerp-Belgium, Emadeb/Hyde/AY Maikifi/Brittania-U Consortium MT Tom Hilde; Oando MT Elka Apollon; Duke Oil MT Nord Gainer,” he said.
  2. A bill seeking to prescribe a jail term of seven years and/or a fine of N500m for officials who spend public funds on foreign medical trips narrowly passed second reading at the House of Representatives on Wednesday. Sponsored by Sergius Ogun (PDP, Edo), the proposed legislation is titled, ‘A Bill for an Act to amend the National Health Act, 2014, and for related matters’.

A year two student of the Department of Linguistics and African Languages, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Miss Ajibola Heritage Ayomikun, has died after she fell into a soakaway at one of the private hostels in the students’ village. The matter was reported to police and personnel of the Osun State Police Command have commenced investigation into the incident.
  4. The All Progressives Congress, APC, and President Muhammadu Buhari have asked the Court of Appeal in Abuja to dismiss the appeal seeking to nullify his election and swear in Abubakar Atiku as President. APC and President Buhari’s submission is contained in their Respondents’ Brief of Argument filed on January 31, 2022, challenging the appeal.
  5. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has introduced self-registration centres in Abuja and Lagos for the 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry (DE) examinations. The board said the system would ultimately reduce the crowds at computer-based test centres (CBTs) in the cities.
  6. The Federal Government will launch an investigation to unravel the circumstances behind the circulation of adulterated petrol with methanol quantities above the country’s specification. The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, announced this on Wednesday.
  7. Zamfara Assembly commences impeachment process against Deputy Governor: Alhaji Nasiru Magarya, the Speaker, Zamfara State House of Assembly, has told Shehu Anka, the Clerk, to issue all members with the impeachment notice of the deputy governor, Mahdi Gusau. A statement from the spokesman of the House, Mustafa Kaura stated that the action was pursuant to Section 188 of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
  8. The Kano State Hisbah Board has destroyed over 3.8 million bottles of assorted beer that were confiscated in the last few months. The Commander-General of the board, Dr Harun Ibn- Sina, stated this during the destruction of the seized beer at Tudun Kalebawa, Dawakin Tofa local government area on Wednesday.
  9. The Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, has revealed that he has already prepared his will due to the spate of insecurity in the country. Known to be outspoken about the insecurity in the nation, the governor said that he is confident that his family will not fight over his properties if anything happens to him.
  10. The House of Representatives has called for measures to tackle the root causes and put a stop to the rising cases of ritual killings in the country. Following the adoption of a motion on urgent public importance by Toby Okechukwu (PDP, Enugu) at the Plenary on Wednesday, the House noted that incidents of ritual killings have assumed an alarming rate in Nigeria in recent times.
  11. Justice D.A. Onyefulu of the Onitsha High Court, on Wednesday, sentenced to death two convicts, Valentine Umezinwa and Emeka Okolonji, for the murder of a sex worker, Blessing Eze. Before the judgment, Onyefulu listened to the cross-examination by the State counsel, N.S. Emeka, and the responses from prison officials, who testified to the good conduct of the convicts in correctional facilities.
  12. Nigeria’s first lady, Aisha Buhari, on Wednesday evening visited Kano State to commiserate with the government, families and the people of the State over the loss of 5-year-old Hanifa Abubakar and the famous cleric, late Ahmad Bamba.
