The Super Eagles of Nigeria are set to face South Africa on Friday in a pivotal 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, now under heightened pressure as they have fallen to fourth place in Group C.
Initially, the Super Eagles were in third place after two 1-1 draws against Zimbabwe and Lesotho in their first qualification matches. However, the dynamics of Group C changed on Thursday when Benin Republic, previously with a draw and a loss, achieved a 1-0 victory over group leaders Rwanda at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny.
This victory elevated Benin to second place, equalizing with Rwanda’s four points from three games. Consequently, South Africa, formerly second, has dropped to third, pushing Nigeria to fourth.
The upcoming match between Nigeria and South Africa, scheduled for 8 p.m. at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, has now become critically important. To enhance their qualification prospects for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Nigeria must secure a win against Bafana Bafana, potentially moving to the top of Group C depending on the result of the match between Lesotho and Zimbabwe.
A loss for Nigeria could severely damage their qualification hopes, forcing them to depend on other teams’ performances while needing to win their remaining fixtures.
Following the match against South Africa, coach Finidi George and his squad will travel to Ivory Coast to face Benin Republic in their fourth qualifier on June 10. Meanwhile, South Africa will play against Zimbabwe on June 11.
