Amnesty International has contradicted President Bola Tinubu’s assertion that security has improved since his assumption of office, revealing that at least 368 individuals were killed between December 2023 and January 1, 2024. In a series of tweets on Thursday, Amnesty International challenged Tinubu’s claim, providing a breakdown of the death toll in various attacks during the stated period.
The human rights organization highlighted specific incidents, stating that 194 people were killed in Plateau between December 23 and 25, 142 killed in Kaduna on December 3, 12 killed in Sokoto on December 24, 8 killed in Katsina on December 24, and 12 killed in Borno on January 1, specifically in Chibok.
The Plateau Christmas Eve killings have garnered significant attention and condemnation nationally and internationally, with calls for the perpetrators to be brought to justice. President Tinubu, while condemning the attacks, has ordered the provision of relief materials for the families of the victims.
The United Nations, France, and the United States of America have also condemned the massacre in Plateau, urging President Tinubu to ensure the swift arrest and prosecution of those responsible. The discrepancy between the reported increase in security and the actual death toll has raised concerns and sparked further discussions on the state of security in Nigeria.
