The Anambra State Government has ordered the immediate closure of Upcoming Star International School in Awka following allegations of bullying involving a seven-year-old pupil. According to the state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, the decision came after reports emerged that a classmate of the pupil had broken her leg during an incident of bullying.
In a statement issued late Tuesday, Chuma-Udeh revealed that the school’s proprietor, Uche Onyeachona, was questioned about the incident. It was discovered that the school was operating without state approval.
Chuma-Udeh stated, “The pupil was bullied by a classmate, leading to a broken leg, and the issue was reported to the ministry. Upon investigation, we found that the school was not officially approved to operate.”
The state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, directed that the school be sealed by 2 p.m. on the same day, citing concerns over the impact of unapproved schools on the welfare of children in the state.
The commissioner emphasized the importance of parents ensuring that their children are enrolled in approved institutions. She warned that proprietors of unapproved schools would face legal consequences for violating state regulations.
