The Nigerian Army has issued a stern warning to bloggers, media practitioners, and social media influencers, cautioning them against disseminating content that could incite societal unrest in their pursuit of online traffic.
Major Gen. H. T Dada, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 82 Division in Enugu, delivered the cautionary message during the opening ceremony of the 33rd edition of the Nigerian Army Social Media Seminar held in Aba, Abia State.
Gen. Dada highlighted the detrimental impact of fake news and offensive social media content, urging media professionals and influencers to exercise restraint in their postings for the greater good of society.
The seminar, organized by the Nigerian Army, aims to inform youths about the Army’s efforts to ensure national security and provide a platform for dialogue on enhancing social media responsibility.
Gen. Dada stressed the importance of utilizing social media for developmental purposes rather than exacerbating societal tensions. He expressed confidence that the seminar would equip participants with the necessary information to contribute to a safe and secure society.
Brigadier Gen. Olusola Diya, the Bridge Commander of the 14 Brigade Ohafia, acknowledged the positive aspects of social media but emphasized the need to leverage the platform for constructive purposes. He encouraged individuals to report any misconduct by military personnel, underscoring the importance of accountability within the armed forces.
Nollywood Star Osita Iheme, known as Papaw, echoed the sentiment, urging social media users to focus on promoting peace and unity rather than spreading harmful content that could damage society.
The seminar featured lectures by esteemed speakers such as Professor U. J Ogbonna of Abia State University Uturu and Dr. Ehiz Odigie, addressing the theme “Enhancing National Security Through the Responsible Use of Social Media.” With over 1000 participants in attendance, the event aimed to foster a culture of responsible social media usage for the betterment of society.
