As Nigeria marks its 64th Independence Day, Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the recent Edo State elections, has issued a strong call for electoral justice. In a heartfelt message to the people of Edo, he urged the judiciary to uphold its duty with impartiality and to hold accountable those responsible for the irregularities witnessed during the governorship election.
The statement, released by the Team Asue Media Organisation (TAMO) and signed by Erhabor Emokpae in Benin City, emphasized the importance of justice in the electoral process. Ighodalo’s message was underscored by a sense of urgency, as he highlighted the need for the judiciary to act decisively against what he termed “the most brazen electoral heist in Nigeria’s democratic history since 1999.”
In his message, Ighodalo expressed his concerns about the current state of the nation, stating, “As we celebrate the 64th Independence Anniversary of our great nation, I stand before you with a heavy heart but unyielding resolve. This year’s celebration is marked by recent events that have left many disheartened.” He lamented the electoral irregularities and reminded citizens of the struggles faced by their forefathers in the fight for rights and freedoms.
Despite the challenges, Ighodalo encouraged his supporters and all Nigerians to remain steadfast and resilient. He urged them to view the obstacles as stepping stones toward a more just and equitable society. “Every challenge we encounter is merely a stepping stone toward the realization of our dreams for a fair, just, and equitable society,” he said.
Ighodalo called for unity among Nigerians, emphasizing the need to rise above the shadows cast upon their collective aspirations. He stated, “Let us unite under the banner of integrity, resilience, and the unwavering belief that the will of the people must prevail.”
Reflecting on the sacrifices made for Nigeria’s independence, he urged citizens to renew their commitment to ensuring that democracy thrives in the country. “Together, we shall forge a path toward a brighter future for Edo State and all of Nigeria. In unity and determination, we will rise,” Ighodalo concluded, inspiring hope for a better tomorrow.
