The scheduled meeting between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which was set to occur today, has been postponed. ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke confirmed the delay, noting that the meeting will now take place on Wednesday, August 28.
The postponement follows an announcement made by the Minister of Education last Friday regarding the meeting’s original date. While the reason for the rescheduling has not been disclosed, the new date aims to address the ongoing issues between ASUU and the Federal Government.
The delay comes amid escalating tensions between public university lecturers and the government. During a national executive council meeting at the University of Ibadan on August 19, 2024, ASUU members resolved to consider a nationwide strike. Their decision stems from the Federal Government’s failure to fulfill the 2009 renegotiated agreement.
ASUU’s key demands include enhancements in lecturers’ welfare, increased funding for universities, and measures to address the proliferation of universities across the country. The union’s actions underscore the growing frustration over unmet agreements and inadequate support for the higher education sector.
