Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini has provided insight into why Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman was substituted at halftime during their 2-0 victory over Venezia. Lookman, who was replaced by Colombia international Juan Cuadrado, struggled to make an impact during the first half of the match.
Gasperini explained in his post-match interview that the decision was influenced by Lookman’s apparent fatigue. “He was probably tired as well. We have to consider the demands of the game and the overall needs of the team,” the coach noted, referring to a similar situation they faced in a previous game against Como.
Despite his early substitution, Lookman has been in good form this season, scoring two goals in five league appearances. He was also named Atalanta’s Player of the Month for September. Furthermore, Lookman is a strong contender for the 2024 CAF Africa Player of the Year award, thanks to his performances for Atalanta and Nigeria, where he helped secure a second-place finish in the 2023 AFCON and contributed to Atalanta’s Europa League triumph last season.
