Emeka Kalu, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former gubernatorial aspirant from Abia State, has rejected claims that the party’s defeat in the 2023 presidential election was due to Atiku Abubakar’s candidacy. Atiku, who ran for president under the PDP banner, lost the election to President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement released in Lagos on Tuesday, Kalu criticized those blaming Atiku for the PDP’s electoral setbacks. He described such criticisms as politically motivated and unjust. Among those who have criticized Atiku are Kola Ologbodiyan, a former PDP National Publicity Secretary, and Chief Olabode George, a prominent party member.
Kalu defended Atiku, emphasizing that the former Vice President has been a dedicated leader with a track record of working to improve Nigeria’s socio-political and economic conditions. He argued that Atiku’s leadership was aimed at addressing the nation’s issues and healing the divisions created by the APC’s governance.
Kalu expressed disappointment over accusations against Atiku, including claims that he is deceitful and that his candidacy was the reason for the PDP’s loss. He questioned how Atiku’s candidacy could have been the sole factor in the party’s defeat, pointing out that the 2023 elections were marred by widespread irregularities.
The Director-General of GIGG, Kalu criticized the attacks on Atiku as part of a deliberate smear campaign intended to damage the former Vice President’s reputation. He asserted that Atiku’s experience and leadership are essential for tackling Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.
Kalu called for a retraction of the damaging statements and warned that legal action might be taken against those involved in what he described as character assassination and defamation. He concluded by urging that Atiku be treated with respect and honor, and that his reputation be preserved.
