A poll on the upcoming Bayelsa State gubernatorial election indicates another victory for Governor Douye Diri across the eight local government areas.
The study was carried out in 211 randomly selected communities from the 24 state constituencies. A total of 2,400 individuals, all holding Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), participated, contributing their viewpoints on the November 11th election. Each constituency had a representation of 100 people from various demographics.
The Bayelsa Government New Media Team initiated the poll, which was conducted by six researchers and 50 research assistants over June and July 2023. The primary focus was on the three main contenders – Governor Diri (PDP), former governor and Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva (APC), and Udengs Eradiri (LP).
Based on expert analysis, the survey shows that Diri is likely to garner the most votes in his home Local Government Area, Kolokuma/Opokuma. Here, 88% of respondents said they would vote for him, with 5% favoring Sylva and 4% for Eradiri. Three percent were undecided.
The survey results suggest a strong showing for Diri in other regions too, including areas that were against him in the 2019 election. Projections indicate him leading in Nembe (70%), Brass (62%), Ogbia (66%), Southern Ijaw (63%), and Yenagoa LGA (70%).
Sylva’s best performance is expected in his home LGA of Brass, where he might receive 33% of the votes. On the other hand, the survey gave Eradiri a bleak outlook, with only 8% of respondents in his home LGA, Yenagoa, indicating they would vote for him.
Dr. Kola Oredipe, Director of New Media, affirmed the validity of the poll results, stating they accurately represent the sentiments of prospective Bayelsa State voters for the November 11, 2023 election.
