Tigran Gambaryan, an executive of Binance Holdings Limited, appeared in the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday in a wheelchair. He was dressed in a black T-shirt and blue jeans, facing charges of money laundering alongside the cryptocurrency firm.
During the court proceedings, Gambaryan initially arrived in a wheelchair but later stood up and walked slowly into the dock. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s lawyer, Ogechi Ujam, informed the court that the trial was scheduled to continue but their lead counsel was absent, requesting a brief adjournment to await his arrival.
Babatunde Fagbohunlu, SAN, representing Binance, and Mark Mordi, SAN, representing Gambaryan, did not oppose the application for an adjournment.
Justice Emeka Nwite then adjourned the matter until noon, following previous orders for the release of Gambaryan’s medical certificate by the Nigerian Correctional Service, which were due by July 16. This followed concerns raised about Gambaryan’s health, including a collapse in court on May 23 and subsequent medical issues.
The defence team had previously raised alarms about Gambaryan’s health deteriorating in the Kuje Correctional Centre, prompting court interventions regarding access to his medical reports.
