In a significant move to attract skilled workers, Canada has lowered the requirements for permanent residency, making it easier for Nigerian professionals and others to secure their place in the country. This change was marked by the latest draw by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), which issued 920 invitations through the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) via the Express Entry system. With a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 739, this draw underscores Canada’s commitment to building a diverse and dynamic economy.
The June 19, 2024 draw further highlighted this flexibility, as 1,499 invitations were issued under the PNP with a lower minimum CRS score of 663. This variation in score requirements reflects the adaptable nature of the Express Entry system, offering opportunities to candidates across a range of CRS scores.
Meanwhile, Canada’s job market continues to thrive, with more jobs added than expected, leading to a drop in the unemployment rate. This positive economic trend makes Canada an even more attractive destination for skilled immigrants.
As of July 2, 2024, the CRS score distribution in the Express Entry pool shows a competitive environment, with the highest concentration of candidates in the 451-500 range. Specifically, 940 candidates have scores between 601-1200, 16,521 candidates fall between 501-600, and 64,761 candidates are in the 451-500 range.
The Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) remains a critical pathway for skilled workers aiming for permanent residency. It allows provinces and territories to nominate candidates based on their skills, education, and work experience, ensuring they meet local economic needs. Each province administers its own PNP, targeting various groups such as students, business people, skilled workers, and semi-skilled workers, to address specific labor market demands.
The Express Entry system, operated by IRCC, is the primary method for managing applications for permanent residency from skilled immigrants. It includes several immigration programs, such as the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Provincial Nominee Program. Candidates in the Express Entry pool are ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which assigns points based on factors like age, education, work experience, and language ability. Regular draws are held approximately every two weeks, with specific cut-off scores that candidates must meet or exceed to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency.
Canada’s recent changes in immigration policy and the robust job market make it an appealing destination for skilled workers worldwide, including those from Nigeria. The country’s commitment to fostering a diverse and vibrant economy ensures it remains a top choice for those seeking new opportunities and a better quality of life.
