Renowned Nigerian comedian and actor, Ayo Ajewole, better known as Woliagba, has strongly criticized his fellow creators for the growing lack of respect towards women on the internet. Recent times have witnessed an influx of inappropriate and objectifying videos produced by content creators in the online sphere.
Expressing his dissatisfaction with this trend, Woliagba condemned such videos for degrading women and undermining their worth. He emphasized that Nigerians hold dear their cultural and traditional values, and he urged for the exploration of alternative methods to convey educational messages without resorting to sensitive subject matter.
In his words: “I’ve been noticing an alarming rise in the disrespect shown towards women’s bodies on social media, all in the name of content creation. Who is the target audience for this content? Countless times, I’ve had to swiftly switch from Instagram to reading the Bible whenever my son watches alongside me, and we stumble upon morally objectionable videos. What has become of this generation? Sleep, wake up, and indulge – that seems to be the norm! Values have eroded, and craftsmanship is fading away.
“Our identity is rooted in culture and tradition. So why this sudden audacity to overly exploit women’s bodies for shock value in the name of content creation? There are numerous ways to convey the same message without resorting to intrusive gestures. What message are you truly conveying when you’re stoking the viewers’ appetite for the immoral? Who is the intended recipient of this message?
“Or is this all about self-indulgence before the camera? Is this truly comedic? Can you even label this as humor? If you aspire to gain recognition, then let it be for something that merits universal admiration.”
