Cristiano Ronaldo, widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, has dropped a significant hint about his impending retirement from professional football. The 39-year-old Portuguese superstar, currently playing for Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, spoke candidly about his career after scoring in his team’s 2-1 victory over Al-Rayyan in the AFC Champions League.
In his post-match remarks, Ronaldo acknowledged the reality of his situation, stating, “I’m just enjoying playing football now as I know I don’t have much time left on the pitch. It is not important to me now to be the best player or to win awards. What is important to me now is to enjoy and help my team.” This heartfelt statement reveals his shift in focus from personal accolades to contributing to his team’s success.
Throughout his illustrious career, Ronaldo has achieved remarkable milestones, netting an astounding 904 career goals. He has represented several prestigious clubs, including Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus, and has also scored 132 goals in 214 appearances for the Portugal national team. Despite being in the twilight of his career, Ronaldo has continued to deliver impressive performances, tallying 64 goals and providing 17 assists in 71 matches for Al-Nassr since his arrival at the club.
In a touching tribute following his latest goal, Ronaldo pointed skyward, dedicating the strike to his late father, José, on what would have been his 71st birthday. José Ronaldo passed away in 2005 due to an alcohol-related liver condition when Cristiano was just 20 years old, a loss that has profoundly impacted him throughout his life.
Ronaldo’s comments about retirement come shortly after he discussed the subject on the “Rio Ferdinand Presents” podcast. He admitted he would miss the adrenaline rush that accompanies scoring goals and the nerves associated with high-pressure moments. “I’m going to miss the adrenaline of scoring a goal, and (the feeling) of being nervous. But I give everything, to 40, 41, it doesn’t matter. I give my body for 25 years of football and I cannot give more because age doesn’t allow me to go further,” he shared.
Despite facing criticism during a challenging Euro 2024 campaign, where he struggled to find the net, Ronaldo remains committed to the sport. He expressed confidence in his ability to produce quality performances for at least a couple more years, saying, “I know for two or three years more I can still produce something good. But after that, I don’t even want to think about it. Let me think in the present and prepare other parts, like my business area.”
As the football world prepares for the eventual farewell of this legendary figure, Ronaldo’s legacy continues to inspire millions, both on and off the pitch.
