The Defence Headquarters has confirmed that Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists ambushed soldiers conducting stabilization operations in Gubio Local Government Area (LGA) of Borno State. The attack, which resulted in a fierce gunfight, led to the deaths of five soldiers, with ten others wounded and four missing. Over 30 terrorists were neutralized in the operation, although some managed to flee with bullet wounds.
Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, detailed the aftermath of the ambush, including the destruction of a gun truck, three TCVs, and an excavator. A reinforcement team, supported by air components, was swiftly deployed to track down the remaining attackers.
Sources indicated that the insurgents had previously attempted to overrun a special military force stationed in Kareto, Gubio LGA, with multiple assaults. The first attack, on August 16, led to 18 soldiers’ deaths and several injuries, while six insurgents were killed. A more recent assault on Tuesday resulted in the deaths of five soldiers, but over 30 terrorists were eliminated in subsequent engagements.
The Defence Headquarters remains committed to tackling terrorism in the region and reinforcing its efforts to secure the safety of personnel and civilians.
