The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has refuted reports claiming that terrorists recently killed 150 kidnapped individuals in Sokoto State due to their inability to pay ransom. The DHQ clarified that the viral video allegedly showing this mass killing is misinformation intended to spread fear and confusion among the public.
Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, addressed the issue, emphasizing that the video did not depict an event in Nigeria but rather in a neighboring African country facing terrorism challenges. He explained that the terrorists circulated the video in an attempt to manipulate public perception and undermine the Nigerian military’s efforts.
Regarding a separate incident, General Buba provided details on a video showing two Mines Resistant Armored Personnel Carriers (MRAPs) in the possession of terrorists in Zamfara State. He explained that these MRAPs were demobilized by Nigerian troops during an operation in the Kwashabawa Village area. The vehicles had become stuck in swampy terrain due to the rainy season, and the troops, unable to recover them, decided to render the MRAPs unusable to prevent the terrorists from benefiting from them.
Buba underscored that the terrorists’ strategy of using such videos is part of a broader disinformation campaign aimed at demoralizing the public and discrediting the military’s ongoing operations. He reassured the public that the military remains committed to safeguarding the nation and urged citizens to remain vigilant against terrorist propaganda.
In his statement, General Buba highlighted the challenges that weather conditions and the changing nature of warfare can present in military operations but affirmed that the Nigerian Armed Forces are adapting and remain focused on achieving their strategic objectives.
