Vice President Kashim Shettima convened a meeting with the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, urging them to craft a comprehensive roadmap that would drive a significant transformation in the nation’s economy. The meeting, which took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, saw Vice President Shettima highlight the pivotal role of fiscal and tax policies in driving economic development and resource mobilization for the country.
Shettima emphasized the magnitude of the task before the committee and expressed his confidence in their ability to develop a robust roadmap that would address fundamental issues concerning fiscal and tax policies, ultimately repositioning the economy. He acknowledged that these policies are vital for the progress of any nation’s economy, underlining the importance of their role.
Addressing the challenges facing the nation, Shettima described it as being in a challenging situation and expressed his belief in the committee’s potential to navigate through the complexities. He also praised the commitment and conviction of his principal, indicating that the President is dedicated to progressive change in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Vice President Shettima urged the committee to prioritize recommendations that can yield swift results, given the current economic realities of the country. He assured the committee of the cooperation of the National Economic Council in their efforts.
Focusing on domestic resource mobilization, Shettima noted that this approach is becoming increasingly relevant globally, even for the largest economies. He highlighted the expertise and integrity of the committee members, expressing his pride in their composition.
The Chairman of the Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, shared the committee’s enthusiasm in contributing to the creation of a new fiscal policy framework tailored to the country’s needs. Oyedele emphasized the readiness of the committee to engage with sub-national governments through the National Economic Council to achieve their mandate.
Oyedele stated, “Our committee is thrilled to be given this opportunity to assist our country in redefining and redesigning a new fiscal policy framework that is well-suited for our nation’s growth and prosperity, contributing to the Nigeria we aspire to become.”
The delegation from the Presidential Committee included individuals such as Kyari A. Bukar, Tayo Aduloju, Ismaila M. Zakari, Prof. Abiola Sanni, Dr. Chinyere Almona, Abubakar Suleiman, Bamate Ogara-Lawson, Taminu Yakubu, and Muhammad Nami.
