The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has approved a sum of $1 million to support Nigeria’s fight against terrorism in 2024.
This announcement was made by the ECOWAS Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs, Prof. Fatou Sow Sarr, during her presentation at the ECOWAS Parliament plenary in Abuja on Friday.
Prof. Sarr explained, “In addition to meeting basic needs, the Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) is allocating $4 million specifically for counter-terrorism efforts,” noting that $1 million each has been allocated to Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic.
“These funds are essential to mitigate the impact of terrorism and armed conflict, which have seriously affected the lives of millions of people,” she added.
The regional bloc’s HRP for 2024 aims to address the urgent needs of 5.3 million people affected by conflict and instability across several West African countries, including Benin, Cote d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo.
A total budget of $13 million has been dedicated to providing vital assistance and support to the most vulnerable populations in these countries.
“This allocation reflects a commitment to meeting the diverse needs of the region, ensuring that no community is left behind,” Prof. Sarr emphasized.
